I don't know why I insist on watching the news while I eat breakfst in the mornings before work. There always seems to be at least one story where I want to reach through the TV screen, grab the culprit, and beat some sense into their heads.

Nadya Suleman is the latest person with her head somewhere where the sun doesn't shine. Suleman, also known as the Octomom because she gave birth to eight babies to add to her brood of six, had the assistance of Angels in Waiting, a nonprofit group that offered free, 24/7 care for all 14 of Suleman's children.

Suleman accused the group of spying on her and reporting her to child welfare officials. What is she so afraid of? Is she hiding something? Her actions are ungrateful at best and suspicious on the surface.

I recently had the opportunity to deal with an altruistic group like Angels in Waiting. The Houston Ground Angels & Pilots volunteer their time, vehicles, airplanes and fuel to transport patients to their medical appointments. In my case, it's MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

These volunteers make all the arrangements. All I had to do is show up. Because of inclement weather in Dallas, we made arrangements to get there, where we were met by a volunteer who drove us to a small airport in Fort Worth. A pilot ws waiting with his plane to get us to Houston, where we were met by another ground volunteer to get us to our hotel.

After treatment, the process reversed: hotel to a small Houston airport, to Fort Worth and then we were handed off to two other pilots who flew us to Amarillo.

All this cost us nothing and we will be forever grateful to these selfless individuals.

But as with many volunteer organizations, there are shortfalls. Houston Ground Angels & Pilots are in need of Amarillo pilots willing to volunteer to transport patients.

Please, if you're a pilot with a little time on your hands from time to time, think about volunteering with Houston Ground Angels & Pilots.
