What has happened to the America most of us grew up in? There used to be a time when Americans were proud of our countrymen. Now, it seems to me, that if some are on the short end of an election, it's open season on vicious criticism and mockery.
I was surprised as anyone when I heard that President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. I think it's too early in his presidency to say he's the most deserving of the honor, but an international panel picked him over 205 other nominees. Maybe it's wishful thinking on the part of the Nobel committee that Obama will follow through on his promises. The committee was not composed of American Democrats, so American Republicans can't cry foul.
Michael Steele, Republican National committee chairman, opened his mouth without engaging his brain when he said the Nobel Peace Prize "shows how meaningless a once honorable and respected award had become."
How about a little pride that an American won the prize for his efforts to try and change the international debate and undo what the last eight years has done to American prestige?
If you can't add something constructive to the debate, Mr. Steele, keep your ridiculously partisan mouth shut.

OK, How is your comment about Mr. Steele constructive and civil? I don't see how the American People can have pride in an award not earned. The award quit meaning anything years ago. The best thing Mr. Obama could have done for America and all sane people was graciously return the award.

Bruce,

I'm new to the Amarillo Globe News so perhaps I've missed an entire series of your commentaries. Since you're a champion of civility I'm sure that on many occasions you arose to the defense of President Bush against those who declared an open season of vicious criticism and mockery that targeted him.

Since we seem to agree that it was a wee bit early in President Obama's presidency for him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize perhaps you can share with me exactly how long is appropriate?

Maybe if the International Committee had waited two full weeks this would validate the award and consequently prove Mr. Steele wrong in his observation ?

What happened to the America where we could agree to disagree, hear each other out and then work towards our goals either in unison or singularly? Even if one of us was ridiculously partisan?

Maybe you would like to explain to our active military and to the loved ones of those who gave their lives in the name of peace why Mr. Obama should have recieved the peace prize. The peace prize has been a joke ever since Carter received it.

I have never seen such hostility towards any other President in our history. If I am not mistaken, Obama is not the one that got us into this war and was not the one that has made us a laughing stock in other countries. If Nobel prize is a joke, then maybe we need to have a new award given, one that is not a joke and one that can be kept...let me see...we can call it the Dumbass Of The Year award....the winner is.....George W. Bush. Maybe Bush should be the one to explain to the active military and families of those who lost a loved one in the war, why we were sent there with no reasons justified. Oh, I forgot, weapons of mass destruction was the reason......NOT!!!

I’m afraid of national defenders of decency and commonsense have fallen down on the job. I’m talking of course about Medved, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and the rest of their motley crew. While filled righteous indignation at the hideous perfidy of those ignoble Swedes in Nobel-ing our President and thus disgracing the nation, they have let slip by an even more dastardly tragedy. I speak, of course, about the 1979 award of the same prize to the nefarious Mother Teresa!

Our radio guardians need to get on the stick and immediately start of campaign to strip this scoundrel of her award on the following grounds:
1. While her real name was Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, she went by Mother Teresa. The clearly indicates she was an intellectual lightweight who couldn’t spell the original. On top of which, notice she is claiming to be a Mother, a claim which is apparently completely unsupported by the facts. If she were a mother, I ask, where is the birth certificate? Where? Where?

2. She was born in Albania, which means that in her youth she undoubtedly cavorted with known communists. As if that wasn’t proof enough, her middle name Gonxhe means “rosebud”, a clear indication of pinko leanings. And she was beatified by a POLISH pope! Get it??

3. Her organization operated 610 missions in 123 countries serving the needs of those with AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. Clearly, she was attempting to undermine the free enterprise system and the noble system of private insurers by handing out free medical care to those without the moral fiber to pay for it, some of whom were probably illegal immigrants to India.

4. Her bone fides as an American citizen are highly suspect. Since she achieved only Honorary Citizenship through an act of Congress in 1996, there is no evidence that ever even recited the pledge of allegiance.
Well if this doesn’t call for a new round of tea parties, I can hardly imagine what would!
